When should you repipe vs. repair your pipes?
Deciding between a repipe or repair project can feel like being stuck between a rock and a hard place. That’s why at Plumbing Installs, we’re always happy to help counsel our customers about the various options and the costs associated with each choice.
There are two main causes for a home to be repiped: acidic water and Quest pipe. A number of years ago, a brand new product called Quest pipe hit the market and thousands of homes had it installed. However, the pipe wore out quickly (sometimes in a matter of years) and caused massive leaks. On the other hand, copper pipe, which will generally last for decades or longer, will deteriorate if your water is acidic.
So, when choosing between a repipe or repair, each customer should ask themselves:
- Is your water acidic?
- Does your home contain Quest Pipe?
- Are there multiple leaks in various locations throughout your building?
- Are more leaks likely to form in the next few years?
If you answered yes to any of the above questions, it may be cheaper in the long run to repipe your home. Otherwise,
you may be faced with more necessity for repairs.

What is the difference between copper and PEX piping?
When repairing or repiping, it important to decide if you want copper or PEX pipe. Copper pipe has been the “go-to” product for decades now; it’s durable, doesn’t corrode easily, and plumbers know it just works well. However, installing copper pipe is time consuming, the price of copper just keeps increasing, and it’s a poor choice for homes with an acidic water supply.
PEX pipes, on the other hand, are still relatively new to the market. Since it’s a flexible tube, it can expand and contract making bursting less likely. Additionally, installation is a breeze, fewer fittings (which are weak points) are needed, and PEX is cheaper than copper. However, since it’s still considered a newer option, many people are still nervous about how well PEX will work in the long term.
